EV charging stations stay broken because we don’t have enough electricians: Report

A new trend  in the age of AI is asking GPT all kinds of crazy questions, not the least of which is, “How can I make more money?’ In every generation, we have seen opportunities. During the Gold Rush, it was the guy selling shovels. At the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, becoming an architect or engineer was worth the educational investment.

Skipping ahead a bit, ironically, the name Tesla is almost more relevant in society today than it was when the inventor himself was walking the earth. With Elon Musk’s company leading the charge (no pun intended) of the EV revolution, we have come to yet another golden opportunity for those searching for a way to find a path toward a rewarding and lucrative career: EV charging stations.

Demand for electricians is charging up

Although the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has been around since 1891, the demand for those with a specific concentration in EV chargers has only appeared within the last few years. And as with most opportunities, this one is also hidden behind a potential crisis.

The propagation of charging stations and ports around the country is one of the driving forces in the expansion of the electric revolution. But with more charging stations inevitably comes more breakdowns, glitches, and non-functioning charging ports.

More than 7,000 charging ports are not functioning nationwide

Distilling down information obtained from the Department of Energy, Automotive News reports that as of October 3rd, there are 4,673 non-working chargers, which translates to more than 7,000 charging ports with “out of order” signs hanging from them. To make matters worse, those figures do not account for any charging stations that were not online during the data retrieval.

Regarding the shortage of electricians qualified to service this escalating problem, Auto News says, “There is a dearth of electricians to do those jobs. Electricians, training companies, and installation providers all say the ambitious charger goals will make that labor shortage even more acute.”

While every Ford F-150 Lightning and Mercedes EQE commercial paints a very rosy picture of a clean and green future, no one has any real plan for when the system starts to break down. And while the EV movement is catching on fast, many are still on the fence about giving up their trusted fossil-fueled cars and trucks. So, if the idea that switching to an electric vehicle could leave them stranded on a desolate roadway in the middle of nowhere because the only charging station is inoperable gets some real traction, it could stall the remarkable pace at which the industry has been growing.

Exacerbating things further, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the labor pool of electricians is slated to drop 14 percent, while demand for qualified IBEW members will rise by six percent.

More demand than supply means higher salaries

According to Salary.com, the current average salary of a journeyman electrician (independent electricians who are experienced but not yet master electricians) is $68,100. But that is the national average, which can nearly double depending on the state of occupation and grow even higher thanks to the law of supply and demand in the years to come. So instead of asking a computer how you can make more money, all you need to do is open your eyes and see that it doesn’t need to give you an answer because it is the answer.

The 2024 MINI Cooper will have a longer range
The incoming 2024 electric Mini Cooper will be available in three models: Mini Cooper E, Mini Cooper SE, and Mini Cooper SE Convertible. The Mini Cooper E will include a 40.7 kWh battery, which should cover a range of up to 186 miles. If it delivers, the upcoming BMW Mini Cooper EV will have improved the range by 40 miles compared to the current Mini Cooper SE EV model with a 32.6 kWh battery.

One of the more annoying things about owning an electric vehicle is charging. Not only are charging stations difficult to find, but they’re also placed in inconvenient locations. You park your vehicle, attach the necessary plug, pay, and then you sit in the car. And wait. Scrolling endlessly on your phone. If you like hot dogs and subs, and own an EV, there’s some good news as 7-Eleven and Subway have both announced that they will be installing electric charging stations at their locations across the U.S.
For 7-Eleven, it’s charging network will be called 7Charge – it’s a catchy name that sounds like a sugar-fueled soda, but for your car – that will offer a “convenient and reliable fast-charging experience” at select stores in the U.S. Charging stations will also be available in Canada, but at a later date. Surprisingly, 7-Eleven claims that 7Charge is already online in Florida, Texas, Colorado, and California.

The 7Charge network will have CHAdeMO and Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs for EVs and also has a nifty payment system. EV owners in an area where 7Charge is available can download the app on their smartphone and use that to pay.
Subway, which is best known for its $5 footlongs also announced plans to build its charging network that will be called Subway EV Charging Oasis. These electric vehicle charging stations seem like they’ll be a little nicer than the ones 7-Eleven will offer with amenities like restrooms, WiFi, playgrounds, and picnic tables. While your body is being refueled by a sub, the brand’s chargers will be able to provide 120 miles of range in roughly 17 minutes to your EV for around $20.
At the moment, Subway confirmed that it’s working with two EV startups to get the charging station up and running: GenZEV Solutions and RED E Charging. According to Subway, the two startups will handle the charging side of things and maintenance.

Consumer Reports tests hundreds of vehicles a year and conducts some of the most intensive tests in the industry. Apparently, the organization logs hundreds of thousands of miles on test vehicles annually to help consumers make an educated purchase. Recently, Consumer Reports ranked 32 car brands in its annual Auto Brand Report Card Rankings and, for the first time in the organization’s history, BMW came out on top as having the most reliable cars.
Before we get into the results, here’s how Consumer Reports ranks its vehicles. Each car that Consumer Reports tests gets an Overall Score. The score is based on four factors: reliability, safety, owner satisfaction, and the road test. The predicted reliability score comes from the organization’s survey that's based on 17 problem areas in cars. A safety score is determined by crash-test scores and available safety features, while the owner satisfaction score is based on a survey that’s completed by Consumer Reports' members. Lastly, the road-test score is based on the various tests that the organization puts vehicles through.

BMW topped Consumer Reports brand rankings with an overall score of 81. Subaru (79), Mini (79), Lexus (77), Honda (77), Toyota (76), Genesis (76), Mazda (75), Audi (74), and Kia (73) finish off the top 10. Out of the automakers in the top 10, Genesis made the largest leap, moving up 12 spots compared to last year, while Mazda fell six spots.
“BMW builds many high-performance, full-featured, and reliable models, so it’s not surprising to see it at the top of our brand rankings,” said Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports. “But non-luxury brands like Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda have also consistently ranked high over the past few years, ensuring that consumers don’t have to sacrifice affordability to get a high-quality car.”
Automakers that did poorly as the least reliable cars in Consumer Reports’ testing include: Land Rover (45), Jeep (46), Jaguar (52), Alfa Romeo (53), Mitsubishi (54), GMC 955), and Mercedes-Benz (56). Chrysler, which finished in 25th place, had the most dramatic drop of any automaker, falling 12 spots compared to last year.
