It happens every year. As summer transitions into fall, it’s time to say farewell to favorites such as pilsners, lighter wines, such as sauvignon blanc, and margaritas, and say what’s up to Scotch whisky, cabernet sauvignon, and spiced rum cocktails.

That’s right, it’s time to transition to darker, heftier sippers to get us through the fall and winter. For rum drinkers, that means something aged longer and often hit with a complimentary batch of spices. You see, spiced rum can be a beautiful, complex, soothing drink when it is paired with just the right ratio of additives. Like a great gin, it can take on (or be infused with) a number of great aroma and flavor-building ingredients.

Creative types can make their own spiced rum at home. It’s rather easy, and basically just involves hitting your favorite bottle of dark rum with corresponding ingredients like ginger, citrus, and baking spices. Let it set for a couple of weeks, strain, and there you have it. For those who just want a reliable pre-made batch, well, there are plenty. And when you have your spiced concoction at the ready, look to these great cocktails to get you excited about fall and winter.

What is spiced rum?

Before we get to our recipes for easy spiced rum drinks, we wanted to answer a couple of questions about spiced rum.

What mixer goes with spiced rum?

As you’ll see in the following recipes, spiced rum can be mixed with so much more than just Coke. It goes great with lemonade, iced tea, orange juice, tomato juice, and even coffee. There’s really no limit to what you can mix with spiced rum.

What’s the difference between rum and spiced rum?

As the name suggests, spiced rum is a rum that has been infused with spices. Generally, spiced rum is made with ordinary white rum. After the rum is distilled, molasses, as well as spices and flavors, are added. Generally, those flavors are cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, citrus fruit, nutmeg, orange, and pepper, as well as other flavors. After the spices and molasses are added, the rum is aged in oak barrels before bottling.

Pumpkin risotto on the plate - a traditional Italian recipe

Risotto is one of those dishes that's gotten a reputation for being something of a diva. This comfortingly creamy and cheesy rice dish is made by lovingly tending to it with warm stock ladled in a bit at a time rather than simply dumping all the ingredients into a pot and calling it a day.

So while it does require a bit more care than a simple white rice or pilaf, it doesn't deserve the high-maintenance reputation it has. And let's be honest -- even if it were more than a little bit challenging to make, the rewards would be well worth the effort. Risotto is a meal that feels luxurious and rich. Its creamy, velvety texture is absolute heaven on earth. And when this dish is given an earthy autumnal upgrade, it becomes the meal everyone craves at the end of a long, cold fall day.

10 wheated whiskey and wheat bourbon bottles to try if you can’t get your hands on any Pappy Van Winkle bourbon
Wheated bourbon is great, and these are some of the best bottles you can get
Pouring a glass of whiskey

Wheat whiskey and wheated bourbon aren’t the same thing. For the uninitiated, the closeness in the name might be very confusing. No matter what kind of whiskey you’re producing, you begin with a mash bill of grains. These might be any combination of corn, rye, wheat, barley, or other grains according to the specific whiskey you’re making.

To be considered a bourbon (among other rules and regulations), the mash bill must consist of at least 51% corn. The rest is up to the distiller. If they’ve crafted a wheated bourbon, this means the secondary grain (after corn) will be wheat. This results in a softer, sweeter, mellower bourbon. This is one of the main reasons Buffalo Trace’s iconic brand Pappy Van Winkle is a wheated bourbon. But it’s not the only one.

Cranberries are hard to come by this fall: How to use lingonberries in fall cocktails and dishes instead
We might like lingonberry more than cranberry
Lingonberries in the wild

Supply chain shortages are claiming some of our favorite goods, from eggs and Champagne to Green Chartreuse liqueur. Now, it seems, cranberries are taking a hit. And that's not the best news given that the holidays are on the horizon.

Fear not, there's a substitute that's just as good, if not better -- the lingonberry. The Scandinavian sibling of the cranberry, lingonberries are perhaps most famous for injecting flavor in Swedish fish candies. The versatile fruit works well in a number of things, from cocktails to sauces like compote. Anybody who's been to Ikea knows how tasty meatballs are with lingonberry, but the fruit can do so much more.
